Lebanon
In September 2006 FRDP was contacted by the Municipality of Tyre, Lebanon. Through the Lebanese Embassy in Rome, the request was made for FRDP to help all of Lebanon's firefighters. The Embassy then notified the Lebanese Ministry of Interior, Department of Civil Defense in Beirut of the request to invite FRDP to help.
Why Help Lebanon
Lebanon is a country that has suffered immensely since the late 1970's. prior to that time it had been referred to as the "Montecarlo of the Middle East". Lebanon had gone through a brutal civil war that endured until the mid 1980's. Subsequent to the cessation of hostilities the Lebanese people worked very hard to return the country to the splendor it once was. All the hard work of 20 years was destroyed in just a few weeks when Israel invaded the Lebanion in the summer of 2006.
The Problem
Israeli bombs had killed many and destroyed much of what had been attained with so much hard work. The fire service was especially hit hard. The Lebanese firefighters worked diligently throughout the bombardments to try and save lives and limit the damage being caused by Israeli air raids. Many of the means of communication, such as roads and bridges, were destroyed making it extremely difficult for firefighters to reach the victims of this violence.
The Situation
As a result of the recent 33 day conflict the Fire and Emergency Services of Lebanon were taxed beyond their limits and have suffered immense damage and loss of life. The statistics are as follows:
Personnel
Firefighter Deaths: 1
Firefighter Severe Injuries: 59
Vehicles
Fire Apparatus Destroyed: 13
Fire Apparatus Damaged: 24
Ambulances Destroyed: 3
Ambulances Damaged: 4
Buildings
Firehouses Completely Destroyed: 8
Firehouses Severely Damaged: 9
Equipment
Fire hose, lighting units, communication equipment, personal protective equipment, water appliances, rescue tools and emergency medical equipment have been destroyed and damaged on a large scale. The actual number is not known. However, the emergency services of Lebanon are working with the bare minimum and many firefighters have no personal protective gear whatsoever - including gloves, boots, helmets and uniforms.
Infrastructure needs to be rebuilt and Lebanese firefghters need equipment. A rescue truck has been donated to FRDP for the Lebanese firefighters. However the funds to transport the vehicle to Beirut and for a team of FRDP fireifghters to train their Lebanese colleagues is desperately needed.
Please help us help the firefighters of a beautiful nation on the shores of the eastern Mediterranean that has suffered so much.
